So many people who live in NYC are currently suffering from lower back pain. This painful and disruptive type of injury could have happened in many different ways. Some people get hurt simply by trying to lift something too heavy and lifting the wrong way while doing it. Degenerative conditions such as arthritis also play a part in causing lower back pain.

Lower back pain is so common that roughly one out of every four Americans has said that they have experienced recent low back pain and everyone can expect to experience it for one reason or another at some point during their lives.

If your symptoms appear to be serious and you feel numbness or weakness, then call your doctor immediately. But if your symptoms seem mild there are ways to treat yourself at home to help reduce the pain and discomfort. The number one piece of advice that you will hear is to ice it down. If possible, apply ice within the first 24 to 48 hours of the injury.

The ice will help reduce swelling and inflammation. Using heat, which is also a popular pain-relieving method, can actually cause more inflammation. After the first 48 hours after the injury, heat is an acceptable form of pain relief. But, as with any injury, if your pain is persistent and does not go away, call your doctor.

Stay in a Good Position to Avoid Lower Back Pain Problems

Another really good way to alleviate minor lower back pain is to just keep moving. Spines are meant to be in motion. Try to keep up with your daily activities as long as the pain is minor enough to tolerate. Just make sure you don’t overdo it. That will do more harm than good. If you are a person that sits a lot during the day then make sure you get up and stretch every 20 minutes or so.

Sitting up straight and practicing good posture are important as well. Sitting hunched over can misalign your spine, which can then lead to more back pain.

And most importantly to help avoid the chance of lower back pain make sure you ergonomically design your workspace. Keep your feet planted firmly on the ground and don’t hunch over to reach things like your keyboard. This will help you avoid the possibility of hurting your back.
