1. Wash the affected area with water
When severe burning or stinging sensation is felt, wash the affected area with water. This removes most of the harsh substances on the surface of the skin. Avoid using soap or other cleansers as these could aggravate a burn.
2. Cool area
Place a cool or wet cloth to relieve the burning sensation. Do not directly apply ice since this can worsen the problem. An affected area can also be placed under cool running water. Do not use a pressure or power sprayer as this can cause more pain or damage.
3. Apply topical burn ointments or balms
Hydrocortisone creams are often recommended as these reduce inflammation. Natural remedies include aloe vera and oats. Aloe vera can be used and directly applied on a burn. If the plant is not available, there are aloe vera gels available in markets. Opt for those containing 90% aloe or higher. Oats are also wonderful in relieving burns. Simply mix oats with honey, aloe vera, or water. Apply the mixture to the burned area.

- Do not apply lotions, lard, grease, or any product that contains oil. Oil will trap heat and will exacerbate the burn.

4. Ibuprofen and Acetaminophen
Get a dose of ibuprofen or acetaminophen for pain. However, for more serious burns, such as when there are blistering or open wounds, consult a physician immediately.
