One such market, the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market, Wuhan, in Wuhan, is believed to have played a significant role in the spread of COVID-19 (coronavirus pandemic – 2019).
The term wet market was first used by the Singapore government in the early 1970s. The purpose behind doing this was to differentiate the identity of these markets from traditional markets. The term wet market became so popular in Singapore that the Oxford English Dictionary included it in its dictionary.
Traditional wet markets are usually built in temporary sheds, open-air spaces or partially open commercial spaces. Modern wet markets are built in air-conditioned buildings with better ventilation, freezing and refrigeration facilities.
