 Five Ways to Get Healthier

Being healthier is a journey that should be ongoing in your life. From your childhood to your teenage years to your young adult years and beyond, you want to be sure that you are doing everything possible to keep your body as healthy as possible.

Whether we are talking about eating right getting regular exercise to abstaining from cigarettes and other substances, everything you do and put into your body can have a long-lasting effect. What are five ways for you to be healthier that you can apply all your life?

1. Moderation

In this age of excess, moderation can be one of the toughest things to learn and stick with. Moderation in food intake, alcohol intake, and in all other facets of your life can help you to stay healthier longer. In addition, it can head off many issues, including obesity, alcoholism, drug abuse, and more.

2. Be Kind to Yourself

We wear our bodies out with the lives that we lead. From work stress to life drama and more, life just seems to be much more complicated than it was even twenty years ago. Giving ourselves permission to mess up or to say “no” can take some of the stress away and it can get us back on our path to what we are meant to do. Saying “no” is one of the most difficult things for me. As a mom to three, I am asked to do many things at their schools and extracurricular activities, but I have learned to tell people that I will think about it, as this gives me time to determine if it is something I really want to do or not. This has given me more time for those things most important to me.

3. Take a Step Back

When things become overwhelming and difficult to deal with, it may be best to take a moment and step back from the situation. People think that this means that they are lazy or don’t want to deal with what is happening, but in fact, it can give you clarity and help you to be able to handle the situation better. It can also decrease your stress level.

4. Be More Active

The only thing that you want to go out full force is exercising. When you move your body, it allows it to work more efficiently and be able to stay in better shape longer. Thirty minutes a day, three to five times a week is sufficient, and if you can get in more time, even better. From finding those perfect smooth elliptical trainers to finding a great place to walk, adding in more movement is your goal. There is a great treadmill review here if you need some help. By cultivating this habit early, you will be able to keep it throughout your life. I wish that I had known this during my teen years, as it could have saved me years of weight issues and back issues through the years.

5. Make Your Health a Priority

Keeping regular doctor’s appointments and having all of the recommended tests can help to stave off many health issues. Gro Harlem Brundtland says, “Investing in health will produce enormous benefits,” and this is something I remind myself of when I am contemplating canceling my yearly checkup. Catching diseases or conditions in their earliest stages can help to prevent permanent damage. That is why you want to have checkups at least yearly and also make your dental health a priority as well. This, along with the above tips, will help you to be healthier and feel better for years to come.
